Darrell lived in Bardwell, Kentucky until he was twelve. When he entered eighth grade his family moved to Fortine, Montana. The family lived in a trailer in a farmer’s cow pasture. During the day Darrell and his brother went hunting and fishing for food while their Dad worked in the Libby Tunnel. The family moved to Petersburg, Alaska for his high school years.  In his senior year of high school, he placed 2nd in state in wrestling and won teenager of the year from the Elks Club. While attending classes full time at SWOCC he lived at the local fire station where he got free room and board as a volunteer fireman for two years.  He eventually went to the University of Oregon and received his B.S. in Geology. Darrell has used his degree for work in Hydrology (fish hatchery), surveying, mapping, mining and quarrying, (drilling and blasting rock), in SE Alaska. When he worked for the fish hatchery and would live for a week or two in forest service cabins on the Stikine River; he had several direct encounters with black bears.  His students usually learn faith and survival lessons when he shares these anecdotes.  Darrell used his schooling to help in the family business of specialty drilling and blasting rock in SE Alaska.

Darrell has been teaching at LCS since 2009.  He primarily teaches science classes.  He is also the soccer and track and field coach for the junior high.  Darrell has taught math, science and geography for the last twelve years.  He started teaching homeschooled students and then taught at classical Christian schools for the next five years. He has been tutoring pre-algebra through pre-calculus regularly for the past eight years, and continues to do so from home. Darrell loves to excite, captivate and challenge each of his students. He wants students to grow in the knowledge of God, develop a desire for learning, and understand how math and science relate to each of them personally.  He believes in every student’s ability to learn.

Darrell enjoys spending time with his family and friends.  He has many hobbies and activities that he likes to do.  He loves to study about God’s creation and what scientists are discovering. Darrell has coached baseball, basketball, track and field, and soccer.  Many times you will find him attending a students' game to cheer for them, as he loves watching the various sports!  When he was younger he participated in wrestling, cross country, baseball, and basketball.  Darrell loves to be outdoors as well.  He is truly at home in the woods, and enjoys hunting, hiking, and fishing. He also loves gardening.  God has blessed him with a green thumb and his vegetable garden is very fruitful even in clay soil!  Darrell was also a leader for fifth and sixth grade boys in the AWANA program at his church, Cedar Mill Bible, for thirteen years.  Darrell and his wife, Jean, have been happily married for almost thirty years.  They have three children.  Matthew is twenty-four years old and is an assistant coach with Darrell for the Jr. High Soccer Team at LCS.  Hannah is nineteen years old and is attending PSU as a junior studying Criminal Justice.  Sarah is twenty-two years old and has Rett Syndrome.  Sarah is at home with Jean as she requires full care.  Sarah understands quite a bit of what is said and going on around her.  She “talks” with her eyes, has quite a sense of humor and loves her family.  Darrell is a past president of the NW Rett Syndrome Foundation and he and Jean are still active members.  Darrell knows that all children are a gift from God.  He and Jean are truly blessed to be entrusted by God with their three children.
